Tonya Williams, an inmate in the Smith County Jail, died at the jail shortly after 6 a.m., Sunday, April 7, said spokesman Larry Christian.
A code blue – a medical emergency – was called in for the second floor of the jail for someone having a medical emergency.
Williams was given CPR then transported to a Tyler hospital where she died.
Family members of the victim were notified and the Texas Rangers have also been called in to conduct an investigation per Smith County Sheriff’s Office protocol.
Justice of the Peace Andy Dunklin held an inquest on the deceased inmate and ordered an autopsy, which will be conducted at Southwestern Institute of Forensic Science in Dallas.
Williams was arrested on Thursday morning, April 4, on drug charges.
