County fraud suspect arrested in Florida

Timothy Mark Adams

Suspected Smith County fraudster Timothy Mark Adams has been arrested in Florida after authorities received information concerning his whereabouts after he allegedly scammed an elderly Smith County couple over promised asphalt work, said Smith County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Larry Christian.
Christian said Adams allegedly took $3,000 from the couple in 2020 for the work that was never performed.
On July 29, Smith County Fraud Investigator John Partlow received information that Adams was staying in an RV park in Taylor County, Fla. The detective corresponded with Taylor County Sheriff’s Investigators who then located and took Adams into custody at an RV park in Perry, Fla.
Adams was taken into custody on several warrants and is currently awaiting extradition to Smith County.
Smith County Investigators received this case as well as other similar cases on Adams, which then led them to correspond with investigators in Hoover, Ala., who were also investigating Adams for similar scams.
Investigators obtained two felony theft warrants on Adams in 2020 as well as a grand jury indictment through the district attorney’s office.
Adams skipped town shortly thereafter and even sent threatening messages to one of the victims.
“Never hire anyone for home repair services until you thoroughly check them out,’’ Partlow said. “Never pay anyone up front for services until the work is completed unless they require money for materials during the project.” Asphalt driveway scammers are one of the most prevalent forms of this type of fraudulent activity and cost victims thousands of dollars each year.
